Saturday 29th May 2004 was Aylesbury CTS Open Obedience Show. It was held at Weston Turville Rugby Football Club as usual. Unfortunately we were informed, the week before the show, that the erection of floodlights at the ground would mean that we would not be able to use the space in our usual, tried and test format. Using a different part of the ground, the rings were erected on Friday evening in preparation for the next day. The grass was really a bit too long but there was nothing that could be done at that late stage.
In the morning the team arrived bright and early - so did the contractors that cut the grass! A tractor/mower trundled up and down the ground cutting the grass but unfortunately had to skirt around the rings that had already been erected. I think the rugby players may have been a bit surprised to find their pitch (minus the rings) with the grass cut in a sort of checked fashion!
Anyway, the day carried on with the usual hitches including blocked toilets in the clubhouse! However, all our judges and stewards turned up and there were no serious problems (save a doggy altercation in the stay ring). The weather stayed reasonably good and the promised rain stayed away until after 5.00pm.
My alloted task for the day was to steward the "Training ring", a job I shared with June (who had done the job before). We charged people 50p or £1 depending on the amount of work they wanted to do. It was fascinating to watch people's different training styles.
Being a bit of a busy-body I couldn't help butting in from time to time and giving my tuppence-worth. I really enjoyed my day and we were kept busy for the whole day (except for our lunch break when we were handsomely fed by our fabulous catering crew). We raised £40 - which is quite a lot of training!
I think we can call the day a success and I think our show committee breathed a sigh of relief for another year!
